The distant melancholy familiar to listeners of Low Skies (Judson's previous band) has grown into emerging layers of song in the tradition of troubadours, journeymen, country-western stars and master-less wanderers. The roots of country and folk are palatable, but a very modern sense of uncertainty drains any refuge taken from the dusty nostalgia of lost eras. Time and Temperature is the finest blend of Indie Folk with progressive abandon, as the ghosts of the Great Ones smile upon on Judson Claiborne with a nod and a wink.

Captured completely live without any over-dubs; the result is a powerful and natural forty minute cycle in album form. Layered desert guitars emerge then disappear, primitive rhythms echo around ancient vocal chants and dark electric grooves lead the journey through a desert of unexpected peaks, valleys, and micro-songs. Their lengthy cinematic approach recalls Godspeed You Black Emperor! with the expressive freedom and abandon of Soft Machine and hometown heroes The Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Dragon Turtle Almanac is a heavy trip; a document of transformation, entropy, and causality. Dragon Turtle evokes Morricone landscapes as if painted by Glenn Branca, where dream atmospheres meet brutal realities of nature and relationships. These forces are both beautiful and destructive. The textures and layers move with a sense of urgency and purpose. The duality of Tom Asselin and Brian Lightbody's musical relationship is also at play, converging an influence of sound spanning from John Cale and Eno to Post-Punk conglomerates of Folk and Kraut Rock.

Spill Out The Night is Dragon Turtle's 17 minute call to arms, a jubilant acceptance of embracing challenge, exploration and discovery through natural wonder. On the flip side, GSGA goes microscopic with Subluminal, as if looking through a high powered telescope into the deepest recesses of night, facing off with the cold winter sky, inspired by crystalline frozen nightscapes, deconstructed guitar drones, and broken electronics. Beautiful and monolithic walls of string scrapes slowly yield to dark melody.

Light Time is a subtle and powerful 12" vinyl exercise in it's own flaws, weaknesses and strength of purpose. Side A's two tracks act as one piece of transitional music; confrontational and satisfying with the softest abandon of self-awareness. Side B glances to the past and confirms the restorative cycle of death, decay, contemplation, and re-growth. For all of the whispery voiced, faux-bohemian, lilting clichés that over populate what we can loosely term as "folk music", Lewis & Clarke once again reminds us that the heart, above all else, is a muscle.

"With lyrics that pluck at the heartstrings, and guitar that can be most simply put as solemnly subtle, there's a sense of heaviness that seems to be barely escaping itself...These are songs that embrace their own hopeful anguish, and satisfy our need to feel."
-freewilliamsburg.com

"Lewis & Clarke blew up their pastoral folk sound into long, torn-open and moody soundscapes on 2007's Blasts of Holy Birth, and they have taken that brooding tangled beauty down even darker roads....Light Time shows once again that Lewis & Clarke's quiet sound is an affecting one."

Leave Ruin

Leave Ruin is Strand of Oaks' hometown deathbed-confession hymnal, the soundtrack of an Exodus. Taking cues from such luminaries as Neil Young (On the Beach era) and a burgeoning Springsteen, Tim Showalter extends his musical gesture and searches to find modesty in the midst of confusion, addressing insecurities and settling existential debt with a simple and beautiful delivery. The personification of a Midwestern Grandfather's advice, his songs smack with hard truth and poignant severity, from child-like naivete to heart worn wisdom... sparse guitar, hammond, rhodes and wooden instruments support an atmosphere that is tender and raw, at times uncomfortable, shockingly candid, and unforgettable.

"At heart it's a man and a guitar in the infinite tradition of men with guitars. Imagine a less dispassionate Damien Jurado, a quieter Neil Young, or a Bon Iver whose lyrics follow a discernible narrative thrust."
-Interview Magazine

"A debut as weathered and warm as an old down comforter. And just as timeless, too...Showalter's inner tug-of-war between dark humor and plain old darkness has made for one hell of a debut."

In 1968, a young woman was found dead along a dirt road near Eagle Creek, north of Georgetown, Kentucky. For 30 years, she was known only as "Tent Girl". This album is a series of overlapping narratives inspired by her story as re-imagined to incorporate imagery and locales from Bauer's rural Kentucky upbringing. These songs explore what it means to be home and lost, what it means to pass from life to death.

"The staggering darkness and the uncomfortable weight of his songwriting is where his magic is."

Globetrotter, troubadour, teacher, migrant worker; Soltero's Tim Howard is a man with many a feather in his cap. This is lovelorn folk-pop at its finest moment: desperate and romantic. Love is declared, sold down the river, and stolen from the hand of God through the course of twelve songs.

"Bursting with intimacy and mystery"
-Boston Globe

"The Soltero sound doesn’t waver and continues to deliver what it always has, intelligently-crafted music with folk roots and a quirky twist.... Howard crafts tunes from sparse, broken heart ballads fit for a poorly-lit bar to lively, well-layered tunes that border on pop"

Following up their acclaimed and uncomfortable Sex Brain EP, The Black Swans remove tongue from cheek and pour forth the reconciliation and reconstruction of spirit. Raw and contrary, Change! is a slow-burner that slips through the fingers, taking a left turn to Twin Peaks. Dark and sweet...Appalachian and learned in its sweep.

"The Swans blend the mysterious and plainspoken to create a sort of uncheery Appalachian chamber music. At
its best, Change! Evokes the melancholy story of a man adrift."

Lewis & Clarke takes us on a "Post-Folk Neo-Baroque" journey through the intricate mysteries of creation. The experience is one of pure subtlety and mind-altering vision, focusing on "the path" rather than obvious hooks, snares and entrapments. Nylon stringed and bowed instruments are set to transcendental verse and laced with future-primitive synth melodies, transporting us from structured chamber folk into meditative passageways. Contributions from members of Man Man and Rachel's. Cover painting by Erika Somogyi.

The melding of minds occur in this haunting and gorgeous combination of two philosophical approaches, a swirl of the literal and metaphoric. Duchamp-inspired rotorelief design. Recorded at One Forest in our Pennsylvania mountains during the winter of 2006.

"This excellent first release from the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania-based label La Société Expéditionnaire is two sides of rustic country-folk music of an exploratory bent. Look at that cover image of a galaxy swirling into a cross-section of a tree trunk and you'll get the idea...It's a page of a nature journal tucked into a philosopher's diary and set adrift, over unfettered voices and instruments."

In 2003, one hundred records were shipped overseas for European distribution, never reaching their destination. Obviously vacationing in the Bermuda Triangle for nearly four years, they have now found their way home. A true miracle. We are proud to offer you the lost batch of Lewis & Clarke's first release. Originally issued by Delboy Records.

"Subdued, but smart and introspective-a bit spooky, too. Lou Rogai has an easy, comfortable way with the mic, and he's a pretty interesting songwriter. 'I can see your breath write apologies across the glass,' he sings in 'Bright Light.' A definite mood record."
